The cast was amazing; especially the colourful way actors played the Lion, Tinman and Scarcrow made the musical a delight to watch. They provided a lot of comedic relief but were serious when they had to be. Danielle Wade played Dorothy really well and sung a clear and strong rendition of the popular song "Over the Rainbow". And everyone was awing and oohing over Dorothy's little dog, Toto, who is played by a rescue dog! He was so well behaved on stage! The Wicked Witch of the West took her shoe obsession to a whole new level. She was really funny to watch on stage.
It is a kid friendly musical; there are a few intense scenes that may frighten younger viewers and there are a few funny puns and references only adults would get, but the kids I saw in the audience seemed to be enjoying themselves. Some where even dressed up as Dorothy with sparkly ruby shoes!
The musical uses the familiar songs from the 1939 The Wizard of Oz film such as "Follow the Yellow Brick Road", "We're Off to See the Wizard" and "If I Only Had a Brain" (also "If I Only Had a Heart" and "If I Only Had the Nerve"), as well as originals by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. My favourite song in the musical was "Already Home", an Andrew Lloyd Webber original, sung by Glinda and Dorothy near the end; it was a song that tugged on my heartstrings.
Oh, and I loved, LOVED Glinda's dress! It was SO SPARKLY. I have never seen a dress that sparkly in my life! I'm not exaggerating! It was mesmerizing.
It was a magical evening!
