On Saturday, Fresh St. Market in West Vancouver hosted the second Grilled Cheese Invitational Grill Off. Five chefs competed for the public's vote for best grilled cheese sandwich. For only $5, we got to sample five types of grilled cheese sandwiches accompanied with a drink. All the proceeds went to help the JGL Foundation for Cerebral Palsy. Good food for a good cause - always a win-win!
Fresh St. Market staff were being dunked in the dunk tank to raise money.
Terra Breads' grilled cheese featured their sourdough bread, havarti cheese, gruvere cheese, asiago cheese, sea salt & butter served with a dollop of Terra Breads ketchup. I liked this one.
Team GFS was more of a chicken sandwich than a grilled cheese one. I couldn't really taste the cheese.
Team Food Freaks added a meat ball on top of their grilled cheese.
Team Cheese It, the Cops are Here did a simple grilled cheese, with an added twist - BBQ smoked salmon! Villagio White Italian Bread, BBQ tips smoked salmon, asiago cheese, mozzarella cheese and butter. I really liked theirs; I voted for them.
Team Fresh Chefs had some cheddar cheese, fontina cheese, and meats on a rosemary and olive oil bread.
We also got to choose any Jones drink - I choose root beer! Delicious!
In the end, Fresh Chefs won and took home the golden spatula - the second year in a row!
The Grilled Cheese Invitational is a fun family event, the grilled cheese was delicious, and there were samples of cheese and other goodies throughout the store. If you haven't gone to this event, it's worth a trip! I hope to see this back again next year.
